As an RA I hope I don’t end up like Messiah.
NO THEY PULLED A MORTAL INSTRUMENTS. I feel like people only like this because it is Gregg Araki, but I gotta be honest this is an incredibly weak film. I have seen Smiley Face and it was masterful, but this was far, FAR from that. It feels like a 2010s period piece, especially with the repeated Blackberry mentions. There’s a LOT of repeated dialogue in this film and explanatory dialogue, telling rather than showing. This film is also severely convoluted. I feel like the main characters are way too accepting of magical/odd shit. An example being when Stella told Smith that Lorelei was a witch and he did not question it whatsoever. Overall, I am disappointed. This could be a circumstance where the sci-fi genre is too big for the director, another example being The Running Man and Edgar Wright. I feel like Gregg Araki’s absurdist editing style did not work in this film, partially because of the genre. The ending is not nearly dramatic enough nor tense enough (besides the obvious explosion) for the stakes that have been set up. Could have been very cool. That poster is amazing though, I feel tricked.
