❝That boy... he must have liked you a lot. Because he wrote your name so many times.❞

A very bittersweet melodrama about two woman connected through their memories of one man. This film really made me think about how your perception of a person can be completely different to how someone else sees them; neither of you are wrong, it's just another facet of their being.
Miho Nakayama in her double role as Hiroko and Itsuki was so, so excellent, seemingly effortlessly adopting different mannerisms and speech patterns for each character. But on the whole, everyone in the cast was almost perfect. The one character I couldn't get behind was Akiba; it seemed like he was trying to speed up Hiroko's grieving period so that he could marry her sooner, going behind her back to write to Itsuki and manipulating her into visiting the mmountain. Aside from that, the visuals and soundtrack matched the atmosphere of the film perfectly, melancholy and gently calming.
It's insane that Love Letter is Shunji Iwai's debut film, because it's full of finesse and elegance; I definitely have to check out more of his filmography.
