came for the kurosawa script, stayed for tetsuro tamba in an eyepatch (iykyk)
but actually stayed bc this was great. kurosawa's touch is so evident; the film's humanist qualities, the moral code by which it functions, the rivalry between tetsu and jakoman, even the cinematography to an extent. i can so easily imagine mifune and nakadai in this, though, of course, takakura and tamba were great.
like if u took bitter rice (if it was good) and man of aran, mashed them together and then set it in japan. a new fave from fukasaku (alongside battle royale and wolves, pigs & men)
