In a village subsisting on its herring fishery, a one-eyed criminal named Jakoman terrorizes the inhabitants. One of them, the son of the head of one of the fish companies by the name of Tetsu, decides to overthrow Jakoman and his cohorts.

came for the kurosawa script, stayed for tetsuro tamba in an eyepatch (iykyk)
but actually stayed bc this was great. kurosawa's touch is so evident; the film's humanist qualities, the moral code by which it functions, the rivalry between tetsu and jakoman, even the cinematography to an extent. i can so easily imagine mifune and nakadai in this, though, of course, takakura and tamba were great.
like if u took bitter rice (if it was good) and man of aran, mashed them together and then set it in japan. a new fave from fukasaku (alongside battle royale and wolves, pigs & men)
painfully underrated.

After watching the latest Super Mario movie I was in a desperate need for a well written plot and this delivered exactly that! Really good characters and a great pace. Didn’t realise that it’s from a screenplay co-written by Kurosawa himself so that explains a fair bit.
Back to the characters though, there isn’t an uninteresting one among them, each one could have had the film centre around them but together you get a wonderful mix bouncing off each other. Definitely another film I’ll be putting on at 1am when I’m alone and in need of a cinematic treat.
