For a film with so much dialogue about anxiety and discomfort over the changing practices of communication visa vie the internet, Non-Fiction ends up being more about how our interpersonal relationships inform our opinions on these things. It’s my favorite kind of movie where intellectual types, pretentious or otherwise, use their opinions and expertise to cloak their real emotions and insecurities. It’s somewhat a meta-text (resulting in a hilarious and self-indulgent moment toward the end), but it stays pretty grounded and amusing throughout.
