Ferrara lands himself a decent chunk of studio funding with Body Snatchers yet another variant of this oft-adapted tale based on the Jack Finney novel, this one slotting in after the Donald Sutherland version and before the Nicole Kidman/Daniel Craig effort. I won’t say too much about the anime adaptation Invasion of the Boobie Snatchers for fear of my channel getting cancelled.
And fear really is the optimal word when it comes to this film, with a ramped up state of paranoia working on a micro level fear of our fellow human and a macro level fear of the Military Industrial Complex. Modern day cookers would have an absolute field day with this.
Former Press Gang babe Gabrielle Anwar moves to a military base with her scientist dad Terry Kinney, annoying kid bro Andy (Reilly Murphy) and hot step mom Meg Tilley (just imagine having Jennifer Tilley as your step-aunt!?!), where a plot is uncovered to replace hoomans with plant pod people aliens. R L Ermey is a General, that one chick who tried to set fire to the West Beverly High homecoming float is his daughter and Forrest Whittaker is a medical doctor.
This was originally intended for Stuart Gordon to direct, who retains a writing credit. With enhanced budget and Hollywood expectation, Ferrara use of shadow and framing is effective in reflecting the thematic paranoia of the work and the effects work, particularly the creepy tentacles used to drain life force is excellent.
Wait…tentacles? Maybe I did watch the Anime version…
