I am confused. I am not sure, what this wants to be. It wants to be a lot. It has Woo typical Melodrama and Action and also a lot of slapstick scene. The action is more toned down and less brutal ass in his other movie, but that doesn’t say much. The story is really weird, it feels like it’s misses some part because so much isn’t explained and there are weird jumps. The Villain and his motivation is completely not explained. Till the end you don‘t know why he wants that painting so bad (maybe it got explained but I missed it on all that what’s happening). The whole backstory of the trio and their dynamic ass well as their connection to their Father and Godfather is underdeveloped.
But all that didn’t matter because the vibe is their. The soundtrack is nice, the locations and cars ghe drive are so cool, I mean that pool house with ghe kitchen window, I want that. And the action scene and especially the heist scenes are absolutely amazing. Chow Yun-Fat and Leslie Cheung have amazing chemistry and work perfectly together. Chow Yun-Fat brings is Normal Charme to this movie, sometimes he a bitt to much over the top but he also has some really funny moments. Leslie Cheung is cool and hot and perfect for this film.
The only problem I really have and can’t ignore is that Cherie Chung Cho-Hung is heavily underused. The should have been incorporated more in the heist and action scenes.
I propably overrated this a bit because vibed so much with this, but this wild have needed 20-30 min more to make the story make sense and I think this would have been better without the really silly slapstick scene like ghe really fast spinning secret door because these kill the vibe a bit and are always out of place. Also I don’t understand why the last 30 secs exist.
Also James and Red Bean pudding were defiantly also in love.
