Continuing on with this journey of watching all The Wizard of Oz adaptations, I knew I’d eventually reach this one. The film is a mixed bag and is actually entertaining at times. That’s already more credit than I thought I’d give it. This is probably one of, if not the worst film adaptation of the book. Only 14 years later and the best book to screen version is released featuring a more sensical story.
I specifically have an issue with the ending. Sure it’s a product of its time, but portraying Dorothy as an unfaithful woman is the last thing I’d expect to see. And of course, it wouldn’t be a film from the 1920’s if they didn’t sprinkle in a little bit of racism!!! By little I mean it’s one of the first things they shove in your face. What the fuck was Larry Semen thinking?
There are only two comments on the YouTube uploaded version of the film. One reads, “Dorothy is amazing.” The other, “painful.” I think both define this adaptation very well.
