Alec Guinness is the most evil man to ever live.
It’s interesting comparing how this portrays Hitler’s last days compared to “Downfall”. This one is in English and doesn’t have much lavish sets but it’s still very atmospheric, the bunker is more dirty, grungier, I feel like it’s actually underground.
Every cut to real footage of destruction in the outside (in sepia tone) from the (in colour) bunker, is done to show irony. It shows how out of their depth The Nazis were in the final days.
Here they make focus on portraying more of Hitler’s artist ambitions. His shaky hands are toned down and he’s more calm than in “Downfall”. And he eats a lot more cake. A lot of Cake. I feel his will for kill himself than be captured was made clearer here, even if it’s probably a very fictional retelling of his final moments. Here we see his wife, Eva kill herself just as he is degrading her and then he takes his own life.
