I've been meaning to check this out for a while, especially knowing it was a classic and that Shinji Higuchi was remaking it last year, but that film getting shoved to Netflix kind of killed my enthusiasm for it so I ended up not getting around to fully watching this original or the newer one as the urgency to check it out before the theatrical run for Higuchi's vanished. Though I am really glad I finally got to it because this film is fucking EXHILARATING from act one and the intimidating runtime flies by. The cast is great, Ken Takakura is compelling every second he is on screen, and the style is just magnetic, that last shot is going to be seared into my brain. Suffice to say, Junya Satō is absolutely on my list of guys to deep dive on after this and just glancing through his filmography, I'm excited to see what else he has in store.
