This is the last movie I thought I would see footage from the bombing of Nagasaki in.
This movie is kind of like Fight Club, meets All of Us Strangers, Meets The Fault in Our Stars, but it unfortunately has the quality and tone of the latter. I can never dislike a Gus Van Sant movie set in Portland though, that is a personal rule, it’s just not possible for me. I also love his direction in this as well as the cinematography and the music, there are so many parts of it that could make it a great movie. It honestly at times seems like a Xavier Dolan movie as well which is interesting but I love Dolan so I don’t mind it, just a bit weird for Van Sant.
Now I have two glaring issues with this movie that stop me from liking it as much as other Van Sant movies. For one, the acting from Henry Hopper and Mia Wasikowska verges on being atrocious. It’s just not good, it’s so bland and there’s so little emotion which I guess is maybe the point but it doesn’t work for this kind of movie. The script wasn’t even bad it was just poorly executed. Second, Hiroshi was such an unnecessary character to have in the movie. He added really little to the story, also had some poor acting and just created a lot of loose ends that didn’t need to be in an otherwise solid plot.
