Herz der Finsternis ist mit einer der einflussreichsten Texte der modernen Literatur. Mit der Zeit entwickelt sich in dieser Reisegeschichte immer mehr eine Studie über Macht, Moral, sowie zivilisatorischen Abgründe. Es ist ein Buch über die Natur des Menschen, über die Dunkelheit in uns allen, unsere Anfälligkeit für Gier und die Tendenz in uns allen, mit unseren guten Absichten den Weg zur Hölle zu ebnen. Dieses Buch birgt eine Studie zum Wahnsinn, es ist eine stetige Abwärtsspirale die Abgründe des menschlichen Geistes hinab.
Die bekannteste Adaption ist dabei ohne Frage Apocalypse Now, wobei Francis Ford Coppola diese ursprüngliche Reise in die Finsternis des Kongos, in den Vietnamkrieg hinein transferiert hat. Auch hier ist der Bruch der zivilisatorischen Fassade perfekt zu spüren. Gewalt, Ausbeutung und völlige moralische Verwahrlosung treten wie im Buch offen zutage.
Bei dieser direkten Verfilmung, hier in Herz der Finsternis, ist Enttäuschend das vorrangige Gefühl, welches wir aufnehmen. Keine wahrhaftige Atmosphäre kann zustandekommen, keine Spannung wird wirklich aufgebaut. Wir sehen zwar Leid und Tod und die Finsternis des Dschungels, doch fühlen nichts dabei. Das große Leiden, diese große Kritik am Imperialismus erscheint wie unerwähnt. Zu allem Übel ist selbst am Schauspiel nichts lohnenswertes. Obwohl man mit Tim Roth und John Malkovich doch eigentlich wirklich gute Chancen hätte, erhalten wir das Gefühl, als hätte niemand wirklich Lust auf diesen Film, als wären die Herzen aller wahrhaftig voll Finsternis, als wäre diese Produktion eigentlich vollkommen irrelevant und bedeutungslos. Dieses Bild dessen wird insbesondere dadurch nur bestärkt, da Apocalypse Now sage und schreibe 14 Jahre älter ist, als dieses Werk. Und doch können wir in ersterem ein unvergessliches Meisterwerk erkennen und in diesem Falle nur etwas, das alle Magie, alle Spannung und kritischen Gesichtspunkte aus der gesamten Geschichte genommen hat.

Heart of Darkness*** is one of the most influential texts in modern literature. Over time, this account of a journey increasingly develops into a study of power, morality, and the abysses of civilization. It is a book about human nature, about the darkness within us all, our vulnerability to greed, and the tendency within us all to use our good intentions and pave the way to hell. This book contains a study of madness; it is a steady downward spiral into the abyss of the human mind.
The best-known adaptation is undoubtedly Apocalypse Now, in which Francis Ford Coppola transferred this original journey into the darkness of the Congo to the Vietnam War. Here, too, the breakdown of the civilizational facade is perfectly captured. Violence, exploitation, and complete moral decay are openly evident, as in the book.
In this direct film adaptation, here in Heart of Darkness, disappointment is the primary feeling we take away. No real atmosphere can be created, no tension is really built up. We see suffering and death and the darkness of the jungle, but feel nothing. The great suffering, this great criticism of imperialism, seems to go unnoticed. To make matters worse, even the acting is not noteworthy. Although Tim Roth and John Malkovich would normally be a really promising casting choice, we get the feeling that no one really wanted to make this film, as if everyone's hearts were truly filled with darkness, as if this production actually had no relevance or meaning whatsoever. This image is reinforced in particular by the fact that Apocalypse Now is a whole 14 years older than this work. And yet we can recognize the earlier film as an unforgettable masterpiece, while in this case we see only something that has taken all the magic, all the tension, and all the critical perspectives out of the entire story.
