This film is deeply frustrating with the way it keeps almost going to the places it needs to go but never quite getting there, bogging down the serious plot with a bunch of Claudette Colbert’s nonsense. It kind of starts to scratch at it at the end when everyone realizes it’s too late and they didn’t truly appreciate the person that gave them everything but then they wrap it up with this neat confusing censorship bow. Paola is gone because she’s gone back to school and for some reason the focus is on the white characters with their thin little plot line. Nobody has changed. Looking forward to digging into this movie and the history more. Not as grand as Sirk’s and not as soapy (though plenty melodramatic) but stuck with me in a way that his didn’t. Slippery, deeply frustrating, but thought provoking and historically important. Left me in tears for a lot of reasons and maybe not just the ones that the film intended.
