Absolutely adorable movie, with quite a strong political presence, it almost feels like a pre-code, the acting is marvelous, the dialog is great. But with strong political presence come many problems for a 30s film, although it’s probably a big deal against racism, it is racist by today’s standards, and otherwise explicitly sexist, homophobic etc. Other movies from this time don’t suffer from this problem as much, because they’re less political. This movie also feels very capitalist, the whole “cloning up the social ladder” shit that goes on. I love that there’s a bunch of great stories within the movie, it makes it so much more fun and interesting.
