I know a lot of people who hate on this version and I don’t get it. I think this is such an excellent telling of the story presented by the music. It is definitely a dated production, sure: My partner noted was just how much this production exists in a post Rent world and so many of the costumes and set it feel like a reaction to that. But once you get past dated books, you find a production with performances that are so great. Especially the relationship between Jesus and Judas is so interesting and genuinely I think Judas is played unironically gay, and I find that beautiful and haunting, and truly truly interesting. Jerome Pradon who plays Judas is absolutely fantastic, and his voice breaks, and I’ve heard people give him crap for that, but That’s only because he’s acting his fucking ass off and I’ll take that over a pretty voice any day. And Glenn Carter playing Jesus has a gorgeous voice and can hit all of the notes and still manages to act Jesus with the appropriate anger and frustration.
This is an always will be my definitive film version of this, at least until we get a pro shot of the Hollywood bowl production.
