Tarantino by way of Bergman.
And let me tell you….the vibes are immaculate. Ghost Dog is oozing with style, perfectly paced, thoroughly entertaining, mysterious, absurd, and rich with hearty cultural flavoring.
Most importantly, it’s a strange but fully realized idea, grafting a complete set of interesting idiosyncrasies atop a classical story (stoic samurai tragedy). Some of these idiosyncrasies are craft-related, like the surreal crossfading and blurred photography, while others are just flairs of meme-ery, like how Whitaker holsters his gun like a samurai sword.
Speaking of Whitaker, he’s perfectly cast and his performance is supremely watchable. Only a face of his gravity can ground the absurdity and harmonize it with the somber, arthouse mood.
This movie was passionately recommended to my wife in a pretty desolate and woeful setting, and maybe that’s what unlocked the film for me. There’s an ache between the meme-ery. I can feel a lonely, beating heart in Ghost Dog for anyone who can relate to self-exile, and I also want a Ghost Dog t-shirt.
