These two and a half stars are mainly for how impressive the fact that film is out and about is, given the circumstances of its making. Corman had this written in six days and shot in six days, all while paying extras $1 an hour in 1961 money and making a billed actor pay his own way to Puerto Rico to shoot it. On top of that, he manages to turn Castro’s takeover of Cuba into an exploitation film. You really wonder how he could pull all that off while still having the monster look like a half digested version of the red guy from Yo Gabba Gabba. The film itself is kinda meh, but passable enough to be enjoyed as I’m sure it kind of was in 1961.
