Bye, statutory rape.While I haven't read the Pulitzer Prize-winning play yet, I did get an understanding of it because three girls in my acting class performed a scene from the play. Whenever one of my three classmates talks about this play, they say it was pretty funny, if not well-aged. The issues of statutory rape and the fact that people were shocked it was a black 15-year-old were definitely points of contention. The way they handled that could have been worse, but it does impact the story, though not enough to make that subplot truly engrossing. I think this would work pretty well on stage. Some parts where the filmmaking shows through create hilarious results, but nothing too crazy. This is an actor's movie, and on that note, all three of these leads fit their characters perfectly. The dialogue is quite good, but I feel certain areas of the presentation can be tiring, making the film feel draggy at times. There was some awkward editing, and I felt I never received the reactions these plot points deserved. It's not terrible at all. I would say it's closer to a 3 than a 2, but this movie needed more to fully draw you into this world.
