Turns out Wild At Heart is a real landmark piece of cinema, dressed in roadside dirtball motel drag. It's the best and worst of American culture, it's as sacred as it is profane, and it would have all fallen apart in a fetid lump if there had been even one knowing wink to the audience. But everyone involved plays it as serious as Dorothy mid-tornado, as ragingly doomed as Elvis on the toilet, and drenched in color and gleamingly garish as the yellow brick road itself. Nic Cage never Nic Caged harder than this, Laura Dern out-sexpots her own mama (as played by her own mama), and a hundred now-legendary dirtbag actors occupy every shadow. And there's even Crispin Glover dancing with a cockroach up his ass. This film has everything.
