The workers of a dye factory have their pay cut by 20% when the factory owner brings in some Manchu thugs to try and increase production. Desperate to reclaim their full wages, the workers hire an actor to impersonate a priest and kung-fu expert from the temple of Shaolin. The factory owner proves the actor a fraud, and punishes all those involved. The young actor feels he has let the workers down, and promises to atone. He sets out for Shaolin, determined to be accepted as a kung-fu pupil at the elite temple.

Holy crap.
I expected to give this movie about 3 stars. I’ve seen a lot of these Shaw brothers movies, and I guess I thought I would be harder to impress at this point.
But nope, the last fight scene in this is incredible, inventive, and a tremendous payoff for the rest of the movie.
The rest of the movie is also really interesting in the sense that it’s basically a comedic take on the previous movie. This makes the movie really stand out, and I respect the balls. That’s always the way to go, even if not all the humor here works (mainly the big teeth gag. Come on. What are we doing here) but some of it totally does. The comedy here at its best reminded me of some of the stronger Stephen chow movies.

When he’s tasked with cleaning his hair at the well, I feel like there was a huge oversight in solution. Don’t get me wrong, dropping a giant stone into a well and washing your hair with the resulting giant splash is cool. But i think he would have saved a lot of time and effort by simply anchoring the heavy stone outside of the well while he descends and cleans his hair at the bottom. Then he can just climb back up when he’s done.
Also, the main (i think?) theme, which they play during the scaffolding and the end is remarkably similar to the pokemon theme song that appears in super smash bros.

Very creative sequel, they could have just copy pasted the first and people wouldve been happy but nah they went in a very unique direction
Pretty slow start and the comedy wasn’t too funny but once it gets to the Shaolin temple it picks up
