"Seen through the wrong end of a telescope an ordinary scene becomes an ancient story. No, it's not nostalgia! It's heartache for all that's lost."
this deserves a 5, u can tell how much this movie means to nobuhiko obayashi, before this movie was made he was diagnosed with lung cancer and u can see how personal this movie is, as the main girl suffers heavily from TB and this movie also channels his own experiences during world war 2 which i found very interesting. i love how fucking good this movie looks, everytime i watch a movie by him im always just stunned at how someone can make a movie so beautiful. people make fun of the obvious green style as if its not a stylistic choice and it honestly makes me annoyed because it give his work so much charm and it makes his movies so unique. the themes of youthful innocence and the devastation of war and how that affects the youth are explored through these stunning visuals and snappy editing and i think it's metaphorical meaning is just outstanding, the metaphor of blood being a symbol of morality especially through minas eyes is so sad and powerful. i've never seen such an approach to war before, obayashi just knows how to make a movie with style, there's so much stylistic editing choices and stylistic shots with so much beautiful detail in the background that u can genuinely never look away, there's a shot of the moon going over minas head and i think thats genuinely one of the most beautifullly stunning shots in any movie ever. in every obayashi movie theres always a shot that ill call one of the best shots/sequences hes THAT good. the cinematography is obviously amazing as i cant shut up about. the soundtrack is rlly good and underrated, i rlly liked that one classic song that played for mina a lot and it added a lot of emotional depth to her already sorrow character. the plot of this is wonderful, i love how it explores a friend group being tragically broken by the effects of the war and how it impacted all of them, whether it be through death or emotional impact. this movie gives the message to maintain peace and i wish this was shown in schools, but this is one of the most under-looked and powerful anti-war movies ever and so far this anti-war trilogy by nobuhiko obayashi has been masterful.
great movie
