I couldn’t get on board with La Collectioneuse as much as I can with some of Rohmer’s later films, especially in terms of the characters. Still, it doesn’t take away from his ability to create richly drawn, expansive figures. As seen in The Green Ray and even here, you’re not necessarily meant to be on the same wavelength as them. That, to me, is one of the biggest appeals of his films: you’re not handed easy access or clear emotional alignment you have to meet them on their own terms. However, at times these characters just take up all the space without offering much insight or intrigue, ultimately making them more frustrating than enlightening.
