Bits and gags. Gags and bits. Sometimes I just don't understand myself and how I resonate with comedy. I found this hilarious. I think it worked so well for me because it feels so self-aware. Title cards for snoring? Are you serious. Too damn funny and clever. Even from the opening shot, the composition of Quaker and his servants is positioned as a proto The Passion of Joan of Arc but used to the opposite end of tonal effectiveness. I was also reminded of the precise organization of Wes Anderson who I have a mixed relationship with. But here, also kind of recalling Playtime, the geometry and kineticism come together in a very consistent fluidity. Everything is complimentarily breezy and silly. And that doesn't even touch on the risqué humour Lubitsch was already gracing us with. All in all a wonderful joy complimented by clever gags.
