“i want to master both life and death”
after watching the original nekromantik - i didn’t know what to feel. it was grotesque, dull, mean-spirited. kinda did what it was aiming to do, but just felt like pure shock content, which i don’t have a problem with personally, except it was just quite boring - even with the footage of skinning a rabbit alive (which i kinda rolled my eyes at, as rabbits are honestly my favourite animals), its biggest sin was just it being sleep-inducing. with that in mind, it took me a good couple months to even think of the sequel - for obvious reason, i was just expecting another shock splatter flick, but it was honestly just so much more than that to me. i was first intrigued by that killer cover - and also the idea of a female protagonist seemed nice, considering my biggest fault of the original film was its dreary male lead. i couldn’t really tell you about the plot for the original film - due to it being unmemorable, but also just because it just didn’t really have much of a plot? everything about it is weak - because it just kinda fails at a film really, feeling like badly edited montage of grimy clips rather than a movie. nekromantik 2, i felt like it understood my criticisms of the original and fixed them all. maybe one of the biggest noticeable differences in the budgets. the original film was truly tacky and low-budget - and it feels rather evident with the cheesy practical effects. here, everything just looks more polished - while obviously still being quite grimy. the gore effects were truly visceral and effective - and the decomposing body was quite realistic - the slimy green skin is truly interesting and i’m quite intrigued with decomposition so that was quite nice!! sticking to the more gory or ‘shock’ aspects of both films - the sequel just feels a lot more tasteful. this can be seen through the original which uses quite out of taste rabbit scenes and schlocky scenes of cats being slammed on walls - both kinda doing nothing to elevate the story in any way. here however, the archive footage of the seal dissection felt it served a purpose - showing the contrast between both of the protagonists. i also feel like this is just more comforting - which is weird to say considered the subject matter, but it just had a soul in comparison to most shock horror. especially the scenes at the carnival - it was just so refreshing, it felt almost like visual poetry. the soundtrack also makes this work better - it’s rather melancholic, which definitely fits the atmosphere for this bleaker and more enjoyable nekromantik. this also has a lot more depth - and is even tragic to a certain extent. it’s clear the protagonist is going through a bad metal patch - with the loss of her boyfriend - she uses the relationship with his rotting corpse to make things how they were before. for that, it’s extremely tragic. ‘nekromantik 2’ is simply only enjoyed by freaks, and i mean that in the most complimentary way possible. the gore is great, the depth is even better, the soundtrack is bittersweet - and it somehow meshes visceral horror, with tragic romance, with even a slight dark comedy thrown in there which i thought was quite nice. this is definitely not for everyone, and i probably wouldn’t recommend it… but im definitely watching this at least 5 more times
