I think this movie is beautifully crafted visually and it’s impressive to have good dialogue go on between 3 or 4 characters for this long. however I felt like the movie had a bad buildup for what it could have been. The whole plot of the movie is alexandre balancing his life and relationship with two other women, which is true and was seen throughout the film but it wasn’t as prominent as I would have liked. Additionally the film is supposed to be about a love trio between the three of them but the film spent the first two hours developing this but the amount of time spent on it was excessive and did not really work out well either. the last hour or so was the trio like how it was displayed in trailers as well as the description of the film but they fell off very quickly and it just wasn’t appealing. there wasn’t as much emotion in this film as I would have liked. impressive acting however and an impressive film overall however could’ve been better.

Overwhelmingly heavy on dialogue, it asks a lot of a non-French speaking audience at this length (among slow developing story arcs, even for French New Wave), and in general I cannot say this wouldn’t be more effective and coherent under a more traditional runtime.

What a major work! This is by far the most French thing I've ever witnessed, and while this didn't keep me exactly on the edge of my seat, for me watching The Mother and the Whore was a very rewarding experience as a whole. The film also featutes arguably a top 10 monologue ever in film.
