Absolutely dreadful from start to finish. Admittedly, TheFineBros/React were always a guilty pleasure of mine, both in middle/high school and today. I watched them for two main reasons; 1) It’s interesting for me to see what normies think of things, 2) They have some of the most gorgeous women on the planet in their line-up (Izzy Rocha if you’re reading this, I am single and free on Friday). Even their other stuff I still kind of enjoyed (I genuinely liked their Spoilers series and MyMusic). I remember them talking about this movie, and at the time thinking “Oh, that’s nice, I guess”. I was happy they were making this career move, but I didn’t want to admit that the film looked really awful. I had no interest in seeing it, and I only saw YouTube videos talking about it (The “Pretty Much It” commentary and I Hate Everything’s “Search for the Worst” video confirmed my suspicions). For the longest time, I vowed to never to pay money to watch this tripe. Then, about a year or two ago, I saw that this film was available for free on YouTube. I kind of wondered what it would be like to experience this train-wreck for myself. I put off for while because… I mean, do I really need to explain myself? But, I had nothing better to do, so I put put on one summer afternoon just to see what the whole thing was like.
What can I say that hasn’t been said before? This was the longest hour and 27 minutes of life. This is truly one of the worst YouTuber movies I’ve ever seen (and that’s saying something). It’s so poorly written, like a writer for bland network sitcom is asked to write an adult swim pilot. That’s the thing that really gets me; it has these “edgy” jokes about how high school popularity sucks, but it’s done in the most bland, corporate way possible. It’s like they’re saying “We don’t want to be cool BUT PLEASE LIKE US WE’RE SO DESPERATE!” The message is so clumsy too. They’re saying that all “cool cliques” in high school are all superficial and terrible, but that the memories you make in are so great and rewarding, so you should cherish them while also hating the hierarchy? So you shouldn’t try to be popular but also exact revenge on your tormentors instead of letting it go and living your own life? What do they want us to think?!?!
This is so full of cliches and tropes, and they do nothing clever with them. There’s a scene where some teens dressed up as characters from The Breakfast Club show up for no reason. And the girl dressed as Claire faints for no reason. And as they walk away, the guy dressed as Bender does his iconic fist salute… for no reason. It was very much in the vein of Friedberg/Selzer “We made a movie reference ISN’T THAT FUNNY?” type of humor. Hardly any jokes work, often they’re just creepy or make no sense. I got one light chuckle out of the guy who played Kane (which makes sense, since he was on Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous. A show that kinda did what this film was trying to do… only good). Everyone else is either hamming it up too much or not caring in the slightest about what they’re saying. Almost like watching a video project from a bunch of kids who’ve never acted before. Maybe it was fun for them, but it sure wasn’t for us.
Some comments on the YouTube upload consider it a “so bad it’s good” film, and I hope to never associate with those people. To me, this film is “so bad it’s an abomination”. There is nothing redeeming about it, other than maybe the fact it let Richard Karn work again. I don’t know where Benny and Rafi are today, but I honestly understand. If I made a movie like this, I’d also hide from the world in shame.
