Stand up occupies a comparatively odd space for me as a viewer. While well written jokes often offer nuanced commentary, the experience is fundamentally binary—the joke lands or it doesn’t—in a way that other sensory oriented mediums rarely are. Some jokes are funnier than others, but the overall enjoyment is much more black and white to me than something like a song or a film which invite a graduated response.
This makes it difficult to assess holistically. There are specials where I can isolate a single bit and call it funny and there others where nothing stands out yet the cumulative effect is funny to me.
I wouldn’t say this was funny at all. I would consider this a weaker special and won’t revisit it. But even in his lows, Chappelle almost always offers an unparalleled level of narrative command, fluidity between provocation and tenderness, and presence.
I am aware I just claimed to have a black and white view on stand up, then proceeded to offer a gray assessment, but when have I ever had a convicted take I thought of 5 minutes ago.
