I hadn’t seen any Rohmer film before this, but My Night at Maud’s pulled me in from the very first scene. Movie is calming in so many ways. The entire film is mostly just conversations long, thoughtful, sometimes flirtatious, sometimes deeply philosophical but never boring. I like how characters has chemistry with each other without forced drama. It’s never overacted or forced there’s no big dramatic outburst, no emotional explosion. And yet, you still feel everything. Everyone is emotionally still but you still feel emotions of character thanks to great acting.
This film made me want to check out the rest of Rohmer’s work, especially if his other movies are also built around these quiet but powerful human moments.
