From the damn get go you know this is Ken Russell film. The camera breathes, it moves, it’s constantly in flux. Just look at the whip pans, the way he shoots Françoise Dorléac. He did not have to go this hard. I won’t say it’s easy to forget why he’s the best to ever do it, but it’s a wonderful reminder every time you watch one of his films.
The film’s a little convoluted sure, and the score grates but it’s fun in the deliciously over-the-top way all of Russell’s films are. It’s in a completely different hemisphere to the first film and better because of it. I can see why people dislike it. I kinda love it and it works even better in context with the other films of the series.
Also, it’s hilarious that you can feel Russell dying to get nudity in but had to settle for paintings to appease the PG rating.
