Blaze Foley is one of my all-time favorite musicians, but even taking that out of the equation, this is a great biopic. It has the ability to play with structure a little more due to the audience not being familiar with its subject. In biopics on huge stars, the assumption is that the audience is at least semi familiar with the major narrative points, and the film has to innovate from that base. It’s noticeable that this had the liberty of finding its own narrative from Blaze’s life.
Great castings all around. Dickey and Sexton nail the singing and speaking voices of Blaze and TVZ, but Alia Shawket delivers a great performance as well. When people talk about a movie couple having great chemistry, it’s always the electric, manic, movie chemistry. Blaze and Sybil’s love is natural and realistic, and it makes their story all the more devastating.
