The story of a man who feels happy only when he is unhappy: addicted to sadness, with such need for pity, that he’s willing to do everything to evoke it from others. This is the life of a man in a world not cruel enough for him.

Pity is a deftly made film about a man bossed with being pitied, and while it’s clearly inspired by Yorgos Lanthimos, the precise and sardonic visual storytelling makes for a twistedly entertaining time. Sadly the film insists upon some greater message for its runtime, making the rather obvious ending all the more disappointing, but as in exercise in style and tragic comedy, the film excels.

It’s unclear what message this is trying to portray, and what emotions it’s trying to provoke. If mainly for shock value, its painfully bland dialogue and filler scenes ruin it. If made with a purpose, it misses the mark completely and appears to be meaninglessly edgy and otherwise boring. Instantaneously unlikeable but somehow still disappointing.

Wonderfully dark. Tragedy and comedy has a thin line dividing them and this film knows it. The simple presentation allows the dark humor this film has to shine through, with the slow build up that clues you in on how twisted the main character is, with the best final ten minutes that only a film like this could have.

This was good but also terrible. I hated everyone in it but the dog. I almost feel sleep somewhere in the middle because this movie sounds like a very good unintentional ASMR video.
