i found this movie intoxicating in many ways. the stunning conviction of poetry and authority in prakash raj’s portrayal of tamil selvan. the sheer beauty and elegance of aishwarya rai as she seduced the screen. and the insane fucking framing and shot composition.

this movie looks like a dream. every frame is so meticulously planned out and complimented by the way the camera moves. every shot had me in awe.

i appreciate mani ratnams choice to focus on the friendship aspect of mgr and karunanithis story however just like most of his attempts to adapt things on screen, i was left wanting a little more.

there is a point in the movie where an interviewer asks anand if his fallout with tamil selvan is rooted in ego or ideological differences. the line is quickly brushed off with the news of kalpana’s crash.

in a sense i guess theyre both true and the movie definitely explores these themes but i just wished the movie doubled down on it and initiated a more in depth discussion regarding their fallout.

regardless im love with the cinematography here and definitely in love with aishwarya rai.

Genuinely, I’m so confused as to where my reviews went. But I vividly remember writing a review for Iruvar. I’m going to be so honest, I love this movie a lot more than Nayakan. Storytelling wise, I personally feel like it ran circles around Nayakan. Okay maybe not multiple circles, maybe just one. Mohanlal and Prakash Raj’s performances go without saying, but oh my gosh Tabu’s character sticks with me even a year later. Mani Ratnam’s cinematography was also impeccable. The scene where Prakash Raj is reciting a poem to Tabu on the ground is just so beautiful staged. I’m also going to link a Vetrimaaran interview about two very shots in the movie. It is in reel format sorry, but it was just very interesting to see the way other people watch movies. 4.5/5
