Gorgeous little slice of life dramedy that may struggle a bit with its narrative but is made great by the solid script and amazing performers bringing it to life, the best of them unsurprisingly being Julianne Moore. I just watched Still Alice which skyrocketed my opinion of Moore as an actress and this is another performance to add to my growing list of roles she’s impressed me with. This might even be my number two role from her behind that one, just like in Still Alice she nailed the subtleties and nuances of the character she was going for, obviously very different this time but it’s the same high level of execution from an actress who’s slowly becoming one of my favorites ever. John Turturro is great next to her as well, but unfortunately that’s where my only real problem comes. Not with John but with the supporting characters here. Besides Arnold none of the characters really felt like anything more than glancing appearances (ending with some pretty abrupt exists btw), I definitely wanted more Michael Cera and wished her family in general were more of a focus. I know it’s about her being a free woman living her best life and I’m 100% on board with that and loved it but I would’ve liked to see her more involved with her kids and grandkids, it just felt like a hole in the movie and Gloria’s character. All in all it’s still so much fun, I love the A24 neon visuals and the message of the story, it’s safe to say I’ll be seeing more from this director at some point.
