Felt like it was only natural for me to finally watch this, considering everything going on in my life and in my country. And in a way, I’m both glad and sad.
I’m glad a great film like this came out of my country. I’m glad the civil war is portrayed in such a grounded, realistic way, especially in how it affects ordinary people’s lives, something Incendies was missing for me.
On the other hand, it’s extremely sad how much I related to everything here. It didn’t feel like watching history, or someone else’s memories… it felt like someone was looking directly at me, my family, my friends, and about a million others, and putting what we’re going through right now on screen.
It’s a great movie about a terrible period in Lebanon’s history.. grounded, personal, witty, funny, sad and painfully real. The ending was the cherry on top, and Mohammad Shamas (Omar) absolutely stole the show.
I have a feeling this will be one of those movies I come back to again and again. I just hope that next time I watch it, it feels like a distant memory… not a present reality.
To my fellow Lebanese, stay safe out there.
