Despite having a lackluster ending, I actually really liked this movie. The exploration of the gothic genre through a more modern lens with a focus on the idea of sexual trauma was super interesting to me, and I found all the character doubles and repeating cycles fascinating. The ending still leaves something to be desired (I really wish they’d fleshed out the “Is Kate crazy like her mom” idea more before the end, but it’s not terrible all things considered. I like a little ambiguity.
Mackenzie Davis had a standout performance, and even though Finn Wolfhard kind of just seemed like he was playing himself, he still managed to be the scariest element in the movie. The aesthetics and soundtrack were also great.
