Fifteen Black men gather in South Central LA to take a cross-country bus trip to attend the Million Man March in Washington, DC in October 1995. Among the attendees are an eclectic set of characters, including a laid-off aircraft worker, a man whose at-risk son is handcuffed to him, a Black Republican, a former gangsta, a Hollywood actor, a cop of mixed racial background, and a white bus driver. All make the trek discussing issues surrounding the March, including manhood, religion, politics, sexuality, and race.

Get on the Bus
Such a fantastic premise for a road trip movie, I think would pair as a nice double feature with Da 5 Bloods. Feels like a play, able to stretch its legs more with pit stops and my favorite element: the music. The way the camera glides, particularly when they’re on the bus is really effective. Lee is at his most restrained here, along with its simplicity I can see why it’s not as talked about in his filmography…but it should be.

Thought this was a really entertaining but powerful introspection on black men during the time of the march, but also of Lee as a black male director. This is supremely underrated, not only because of its story, but also because it is a really well shot film, especially considering its budget.
