"The tenses of love are easily confused." Christine is a wonderfully balanced, moody, and atmospheric film with sweeping emotion and doomed love. Though it is based on the German period drama film Liebelei, Gaspard-Huit draws various allusions, specifically to Romeo and Juliet with the idea of fate. It is steeped in tragic romanticism, innocence, and it blends hopeful, blissful romance with debilitating melodrama. The ending is something to admire, and the cinematography (even though I watched this on 240p) was stunning. While the whole premise of the movie took a bit too long to actually synthesize, the movie is undeniably affecting and effective in capturing doom.
