Hopper emptied his whole psyche onto the screen and didn’t even sort any of it out, raw impulse, paranoia, ego and addiction all colliding at once. One moment it drifts into this weirdly peaceful haze and then next it explodes, like the films actively trying to shake you out of any comfort you find. When I say this film has one of the most unhinged scenes of all time I’m not putting it lightly. The editing feels like a nervous breakdown and nothing lines up in a way that even remotely makes sense, but that’s why it works so well. You’re watching a man burn through his own delusions, half genius, half stupidity, all of it driven by this drug soaked conviction that feels so personal to him.
