Co-written by Todd Haynes (Carol, May December) and directed by photographer Cindy Sherman in her directorial debut, Office Killer is a fun low budget horror film, that’s more of a dark comedy than anything. Starring Carol Kane and Brat Pack member Molly Ringwald, Office Killer follows a paper editor Dorine (Carol Kane), who after working from home due to cuts in their budget, goes on a killing spree due to her troubles of social loneliness.
This would’ve been a fitting film to watch during the 2020 pandemic. I think many people felt different due to the social alienation of having to stay at home. Office Killer was unintentionally ahead of its time, and it’s interesting to watch a film like this, knowing that a film like this released 23 years before we all lived through this… not the murderous rampage part.
But what a fun film overall, with simple, yet brutal kills with great makeup effects. Carol Kane is great, along with Molly Ringwald, who gives such a different performance to the ones I’ve see from her in those 80’s classics. Kind of sad that this is the only feature length film from Cindy Sherman, who I think did a great job with a noticeably small budget. I think that’s also thanks to Todd Haynes for writing a decent script as well. Definitely recommend if you love low budget horror films.
