nobody listens to ahmad. not the teacher. not the adults. not the neighbours he stops along the way. he speaks and people continue whatever they were already doing. being a child was apparently reason enough to ignore everything he said. watching the film was so frustrating because kiarostami doesn’t dramatise the injustice, he shows it to you plainly, exactly how it was.
despite it all ahmad never raises his voice. hes under constant pressure, sent in circles, dismissed at every door, and he just continues. quietly and without self pity. hes more emotionally mature than every adult in the film. the calmness he carried in moments that would tip most people over the edge was inspiring.
what the film is really about is what you are willing to do for someone else. ahmad risks punishment, walks to a village he doesn’t know, knocks on doors that didn't answer, all because his friend would be humiliated without his notebook. he was never asked to do any of this. he just understood that it needed to be done. thats true friendship.
being capable of helping but simply not bothering because it isn’t your problem is a problem itself. most people will walk past what doesn’t inconvenience them. not out of spite, rather just out of habit. the habit of not noticing. we’ve all perfected it.
