J’avais adoré The Ascent donc je pensais que celui ci me plairait tout autant, malheureusement le manque de structure dans le scénario et plus généralement d’intrigue principale m’a lassé au bout de quarante cinq min.

J’avais adoré The Ascent donc je pensais que celui ci me plairait tout autant, malheureusement le manque de structure dans le scénario et plus généralement d’intrigue principale m’a lassé au bout de quarante cinq min.

A beautiful film about a woman who fought for the world she’s living in only to find out that world is one where she is a ghost. Nadezhda is such a interesting character to see and have the film explore. We see her life and the mundanity and lack of purpose she has. It is explored beautifully thanks to the wonderful actress portraying her, the excellent Maya Bulgakova

It was during this that I found out that her name actually means hope adding a cruel layer of irony to her entire character. Both a tough former soldier yet she looks out to a window and sense the air of melancholy nostalgia that surrounds her. We barely ever see the war but you can tell the brutality of it just by her mannerisms. 

It is a slow burn but I think the ending really does complete the entire film. It is the perfect cherry on top to put on a very well made film that really brings the entire movie together. The aesthetic of the film is beautiful as well. The very real and grounded natural setting is such a perfect contrast when we see scenes to her flying whether its a daydream or a memory. 

I also really love the Russian doll play scene. I thought it was humorous and adorable.

Larisa Shepitko’s debut feature film is a lovely study of an ex-pilot struggling to reintegrate back into everyday life. Feelings of an unfulfilling and useless existence are what haunt her everyday. With beautiful cinematography and great compositions, this was quite a nice film. I didn’t feel fully connected into the story or characters, which is a shame because it’s a nice story, I did enjoy it but it’s definitely not a contender to Shepitko’s wonderful film, The Ascent 1977. Still overall a decent film and I’m glad I’ve watched it, might be in need of revision soon.

Beautifully shot film, the last 30 minutes really carried. That ending was devastating but beautiful at the same time, but I think it would’ve left more of an impact if we got to know Nadezhda more than we got too. But I thought it, nonetheless, was beautiful. I especially appreciated the aerial shots
