An all-knowing interlocutor guides us through a series of affairs in Vienna, 1900. A soldier meets an eager young lady of the evening. Later he has an affair with a young lady, who becomes a maid and does similarly with the young man of the house. The young man seduces a married woman. On and on, spinning on the gay carousel of life.

All I got out of this was Simone, it was kind of boring and disjointed other than that. I usually like Ophüls.

clever structure, but it didn’t fully work for me. the constant switching between characters is interesting, but it keeps everything at a distance emotionally. i admired the idea more than i actually connected with it. charming in parts, but i was just a bit too detached overall.

Maria’s review: it was great, it was funny, frivolous, it had a message and it beat you over the head with it.
