365 Days of Film pick #36
Beyond the Black Rainbow
I’m not gonna lie I don’t understand this movie at all. I don’t get what the plot is or the themes or anything of what’s going on.
I find this film akin to something like “Il Conformista,” but at least that film had plot… I wasn’t into the plot but at least it was there.
This film looks great, the psychedelic visuals and score are awesome, but there isn’t really anything happening. The wicked visuals don’t service a narrative. Harkening back to my “I Saw the Tv Glow,” review at least the trippy and surreal visuals induced a sense of confusion that made sense for the characters. Even if that movie didn’t have much of a plot either the visuals still played a role as to what the characters were feeling.
I’ve read a substantial amount of reviews and it seems a few people come to the same conclusions about what the fuck is actually going on in this film. In my opinion films shouldn’t be too on the nose but also shouldn’t be too subtle. They need to find a good middle ground and I feel Beyond the Black Rainbow fails at this. It’s way too artsy and ambiguous.
I think the most beautiful part of cinema is that different people have different opinions and perspectives about what they’ve watched but I struggle to think of how a discussion about this movie would go.
I don’t think this film is worth the watch unless you’re really into that art-house, surreal, nonsense, nothing’s really going on type of genre.
I spent the whole film wishing it would just get on with whatever it was trying to say but I just don’t care.
The only film in this challenge I have refused to watch in its entirety. I got about an hour and ten minutes in and nothing was going on.
Also, the ending sucked hard. Disappointing and anti-climactic.
Overall, this is an incredibly shot film with awesome visuals and a wicked soundtrack that doesn’t seem to go anywhere or do anything.
