The fourth time I've watched this and the first time I actually watched it on separate days and not all in one sitting. Still a masterpiece. Just six hours of beautifully and innovatively filmed misery, depression, self-destruction, shame, guilt, incest, grime, and murder, followed by an hour of just the most beautifully done character work in cinema history. This shouldn't work, but it does and I love it for it.

Also, I got my dad to watch it this time, so that's one person I've introduced this movie to. So that's a win.

The plot is kinda messed up, and boy is it drawn out, but those film and editing techniques are SO COOL. The prologue especially is so innovative and fun that it puts any modern film to shame. We should bring back bizarro editing. It's very fun.

Took me 3 days to watch this, but it was worth every second, Abel Gance is the goat of the silent era.

This is the third time I've watched this movie in less than nine months. This seven hour long silent movie. I just start thinking about again and I get obsessed to the point that I have to watch it again in order just to get it out of my system. It's maddening, adoring a film like this, unable to properly articulate why it affects me the way that it does. I would love to discuss it with others, but no one has seen it or has a strong desire to see it, because again it's a seven hour long French silent film that largely centers on incestous intrusive thoughts with the added bonus on multiple suicide attempts. It must make me look more insane than I already am. I spent this rewatch writing down 19 pages of notes, jotting down observations, writing down the quotes, with the hope I may be able to write an essay about how this is an incredible work of art that everyone should seek out. Maybe someday. I just want Criterion to release a blu-ray copy in time for Christmas. Let's hope I don't rewatch it again until that happens.
