I think what struck me most about this was how the laundry was the women’s. They owned it. It was one of the few things they could truly call their own. But even so, there were the men who “didn’t like to see the diapers hung up” or “wanted their socks pressed a certain way” so even then it wasn’t theirs. However, the way they hung them up, the way they folded them and the way they could converse with the other women subjected to the same fate became theirs somehow and that’s what they held onto.
