This movie makes absolutely no sense, but goddamn this movie is a fucking blast. I love how this movie takes itself so seriously while simultaneously not being afraid to go way out of line.
The journey in this movie is fantastic, due to a blend of likeable characters and a fantasy atmosphere this world takes you in and doesn’t let go. Our main group is great, all having unique, yet likeable personalities and although they aren’t trusting of each other do have respect for one another. Obviously Kasumi is a standout, great backstory and makes perfect hero decisions, always easy to root for and means just as much to the story which i’ll get to. And Marco is also great serving as the sacrific throughout and representing all who came before him, his chemistry with Kasumi is great and I love how they sent them off. And as far as our journey goes not many are like it, just littered with character and it was so fun to traverse these dungeon and monsters through these characters, I especially loved how they taught us and the group through Tim using his game as a metaphor for the hell they are enduring.
Okay, this review is about to take a turn and that is due to the utterly abysmal storytelling, plot development, and even pacing unfortunately. I can’t believe I am saying this again for a movie like this but they are just doing too damn much. Like everything about this plot contradicts every rule made before it. I’m not even sure I can get into because to be honest I don’t know if I fully understood but just nothing clicks in this movie. They proceed to get every character intertwined and somehow string together endless plotpoints just for some lackluster resolution. Like there is no cohesion whatsoever and they don’t even try to hide it, like for example why do we keep going back to the same scene, and how did Kasumi switch bodies I don’t even know, like they just pile and pile until your just hoping it all makes sense but it never does. At one point I thought I finally figured it out but then we proceed to enter another chamber full of memories and new alternates. And don’t even ask about the exposition because it did nothing to help me understand, just a bunch of political mumbo jumbo and then we switch gear extremely rapidly.
Forgot to mention but the animation is interesting here, while beautifully vibrant and mesmerizing at parts, when cgi is used it gets borderline offensive to the medium and throws it off a bit.
An extremely polarizing film but I absolutely recommend it, will not be for everyone but for sure worth checking out of anything for the characters and their dialogue and actions, I love that movies like this exist but they do kinda piss me off.
