Dark and brutal, Greenway’s The Baby of Mâcon explores the nature of purity, class, and the sexes. The baby born of a seemingly virgin birth is cause for celebration and whips the public into a frenzy, believing themselves to be in the presence of a pure being. The film’s criticism of adhering blindly to faith showcases how dehumanizing it can be and how acts of cruelty can be justified using religion, especially in the film’s final moments.

The presentation of the play within the film fades away with the camera existing in a plane of its own that gives context and subtlety but maintains a distinct position of the world being presented one of a level of artifice beyond second level of artifice then presented to us. Only by removing the audience from the events on screen to such an extreme degree could this film work and the incredible set design puts this film high above many others

The production through and through is really excellently put together, those last 10-15 minutes are fucking brutal to watch.

I've said, and meant, about a few Greenaway movies that I could see myself wanting to rewatch it, this however is not I could see myself ever wanting to revisit. I think once is enough. I've felt Greenaways movies have become increasingly heavy and harder to watch, more draining perhaps, as I've moved up through his filmography and I think it tops at this.

It's still very much a Greenaway with all the things here we know and love him for. This might be his most impressive movie so far actually. While it might not have looked AS good as The cook the theif his wife and her lover or had performances as strong either, it didn't necessarily require that. The set design and costume design is top tier and the way it moves between reality and stage play is impressive. It's also able to envoke so much emotion, for me at least and it's definitely one of his more interesting movies (and that's saying something!)

Hugely respect the movie and just about everything thing it has to offer however I could not see myself revisiting. And in definitely gonna have to take a little break and watch some step up movies as I've done so far with Greenaway, cause too much of him is tough to handle
