I thought I was going to moan about the top reviews for this being dominated by horny, but I thought some more and realised that the film itself is not offering much more than that anyway so it’s probably fine.
What did surprise me is the overwhelming preference for Alfred Molina over Sean Bean and Sophie Marceau. He’s going for a particular approach to the character of Levin, trying to make it his own, with a somewhat optimistic, light, touch. I appreciated the effort. I didn’t think he was that hot.
I guess tastes have changed. Dorky and charming is in, crimson chin is out. Sean’s chin looks good to me, and Sophie, one of the great beauties of the 90s, is at her peak. Call me old fashioned.
Oh, the film! It’s ok. It has the essence of something you might watch in class. Well-behaved and straightforward. It didn’t hit for me at all even if sometimes it was quite beautiful.
It also suffers from the speed-run problem. It seems like adaptors of this novel either have to make it 3 hours long, which I wouldn’t have a problem with, or do something completely radical.
