Screw this movie dude I’m absolutely wrecked. Should probably let it marinate more but here is my stream of consciousness review after literally just finishing it at 3 in the morning.
It so beautifully captures the simple moments of a great slice of life film but the throughline of it all is a feeling that we have built this world wrong. The world these characters live in is the world we live in and the systems and decisions of the people in power in this world stop people from being able to live in peace. Yes they experience so much true joy, but it’s clouded by the fact they always have to pinch pennies and shoplift just to survive. They know love, but in the end, Lin has to go back to abuse and neglect because the system fails her.
The whole movie you’re wondering “how on earth is this going to work out for them” and then you realize with like 20 minutes left that it isn’t. And then you think, “well at least someone is going to save Lin” even up until the last shot of the movie and they don’t. It’s a heartbreaking movie and not to be too depressed about it but it’s heartbreaking because it leans more towards depicting the majority of the lived experience of people living in poverty and not the 1% of happy endings that we are used to seeing in movies.
