I first watched this back in 2019 when it came out in theaters. Saw it with my granddad and we both absolutely loved it. Like immediately we started shipping Klaus Jäger and Nikolai Ivushkin because they're just such an incredible duo. They're complete opposites but at the same time they feel like two sides of the same person. Like two halves of the same coin. Oppenheimers. And one of them always has to die because they can't exist together
The chemistry between them is just wow, oh my god. I fucking love this movie. I watch it religiously at least once a year since 2019, sometimes more. Like I'll watch it multiple times in one day, just have it on repeat
Huge thank you to director Sidorov for making this. It's such a cool movie, super dynamic, tons of action, and on top of that the characters are really well-developed, which is rare for war movies. And honestly Russia makes some fucking great war movies. I literally pray to this genre when it's done by Russia because nobody can beat them at making war movies. Ever
It pisses me off that this movie has such low ratings. I get it, there are some historical inaccuracies - like the shell going through two tanks at once, which is technically impossible. But I don't give a shit. I always give this movie five stars and a heart. Not for historical accuracy, even though that's normally really important to me because I actually know a lot about military history. Like I know my shit. But this movie gets five stars for the character dynamics. For Klaus and Nikolai
Like how do you even create characters this alive? I love thinking about all the little moments - like Klaus probably saw Ivushkin and his crew hiding shells in bags at the concentration camp, and he just let them do it. There are so many moments like that. I think Klaus and Ivushkin, even though they were enemies, respected each other's experience, strength, and skills. It's just fire. It's not just a story about war, it's a story about these two specifically
This is literally the pairing I still read fanfiction about. And honestly I'm fine with everything except I really wish Kolya had saved Klaus on that bridge and taken him with him. Even though that's almost impossible. But the success rate would've been 100% if they were both on board with the plan. Crossing borders, Klaus would've been useful. Plus he's a tank commander, he knows how to operate tanks, that's valuable as hell. And he's a Standartenführer, which in the USSR was basically the equivalent of a colonel
And can we talk about Vinzenz Kiefer's performance? That was just something else. I know the actor is an absolute sweetheart in real life, but he played the villain perfectly. He made Klaus Jäger so charismatic. Just nailed it
