similar to titane (predating it in fact) just slightly less explicit. jumbo isn’t your traditional body horror in the sense it, obviously, isn’t really a horror at all, rather it embraces jeanne’s physical connection with the amusement park ride.
the erotic fusion with said machinery is evident in the intimate yet ‘alien’ interactions, literally caressing, licking and what is literally surrendering to the machine. in a similar way as titane, the visceral fluid, of which i assume is some kind of motor oil, is obviously ‘metaphorical’ (or just quite literal) for bodily fluids. i do find it interesting, the blurring of boundaries between human and machine in this instance. in referencing titane, the relationship between the protagonist and the car is somewhat representative of breaking outside of heteronormative expectations and i’m sure this too is the case here. the ending, and the acceptance from her mother of her attraction to jumbo feels like a more overt acceptance of non-normative identities. i feel as though the whole film draws upon a parallel to queerness through unconventional love and being met with social rejection.
a very interesting film, and a surprisingly wholesome ending
