This was better than 80% of movies that came out this past year, and it was made nearly a century ago. The coloring, the camera work, ANNA MAE WONG. Asian representation had clearly made significant progress since Broken Blossoms. Definitely my new fav silent film (I watched with the contemporary scoring, which REALLY made the film what it was, too).

Definitely my new fav silent film (I watched with the contemporary scoring, which REALLY made the film what it was, too).

For a film from the later part of the silent film era, it really takes the nuance of acting without dialogue and allows you to really read the eyes and the expressions. From the performances to the soundtrack, it’s a solid little film with a little touch of comedy, some drama, and just a little bit of intrigue. Was surprised to be able to fully pay attention to it because I’m pretty bad about getting distracted, even when watching modern stuff.
